General inspections (incl. AU) according to §29 StVZO
The main inspection (HU), commonly known as the “TÜV”, is the regular inspection of motor vehicles and trailers that are registered for road use in the Federal Republic of Germany. As part of the general inspection, the roadworthiness and road safety are scrutinized in detail, based on § 29 of the German Road Traffic Licensing Regulations (StVZO).
Vehicles with their own license plate may therefore only be driven on the road with a valid HU sticker. For privately used cars and motorcycles, the HU is mandatory every 2 years. Trucks and vehicles for passenger transportation must have an annual inspection.
Since 01.12.1999, there is no longer an extension of the deadline for the main inspection. If you exceed the deadline, you will have to pay a fine if you are caught by the police. (Excerpt from the catalog of fines) This will not happen to you if you know the due date for the main inspection of your vehicle. The sticker on the rear license plate shows you the date for the next main inspection.

To ensure that your vehicle passes the main inspection without any problems, it is worth rectifying common defects at an early stage. Small defects, such as those in the lights or windscreen wipers, are often easy to repair yourself and prevent expensive follow-up inspections. With simple preparations such as checking the tire tread and fluid levels, you can ensure that your vehicle is safe and ready for the general inspection.
This increases your chances of passing the exam and saves you time and money!
Here are the five most common faults that you can easily rectify yourself before the MOT. These steps will help you to avoid minor defects before the MOT:
Defective
lighting:
Check and replace broken bulbs (headlights, indicators, brake lights).
Worn
tires:
Check the tire tread and air pressure.
Defective windshield wipers:
Replace damaged or worn wiper blades.
Insufficient braking power:
Have the brake pads and brake fluid checked.
Liquid
levels:
Check and top up the oil, coolant and windshield wiper fluid.

You should bring these 3 things with you for the main inspection (HU):
- The vehicle to be tested
- Registration certificate part I (vehicle registration document).
- Any additional documents: Such as operating licenses for conversions or retrofits.
If available, our employees are also happy to receive:
- Last HU test report.
- Proof of emissions test (if required separately).
- Maintenance and repairs: Check lights, tires, brakes and fluids (oil, coolant).
Make sure that the vehicle is clean, especially in the area of the chassis number.
