In the case of vehicle attachments, conversions and modifications, TÜV SÜD’s test engineers inspect the vehicles and document the changes in accordance with Section 19 (3) of the German Road Traffic Licensing Regulations (StVZO) in a modification approval certificate (so-called “registration”). Modification approval is also required, for example, when converting to other wheels and/or tires, installing a trailer towing device and making changes to the chassis (e.g. lowering).

Modification approval is always required when a parts certificate is presented. In addition, certain modifications may already be approved in the national (ABE) or international approval (EC type approval) for the respective vehicle. For this purpose, an extract from the vehicle’s ABE or EC type approval, certified by the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), must be submitted. Whether a correction of the vehicle documents is required after successful modification approval is shown in the certificate that we will issue to you after a positive assessment.
